Eco Design 2022

From the 1st of January 2022 all wood burners supplied and installed by Herts Woodburners will be Eco Design 2022 approved meaning they meet the governments new regulations on emissions and efficiencies. You can relax knowing that with Herts Woodburners you are meeting the highest environmentally friendly standards. You will also need to ensure that the wood you burn in your stove is fully seasoned or kiln dried with a minimum moisture content of 20%.

Log Store Anyone?

Aspect 4 Compact with 225mm high Log Store

Just installed an Aspect 4 Compact with a log store. Both the Aspect 4 and 5 have an option of a log store, which works very well if the fireplace can be opened high enough. Here's the picture, with a painted fire board finish to the inside of the fireplace, and a slate hearth. Log stores are available at 150mm or 225mm high. This one is the high version. We think it looks great

Avalon 8 Slimline

Our customer was building a new home and wanted to finish off the main room with a multi fuel stove in an inglenook fireplace. We met with the customer and builder on site, who was building the fireplace, and co-ordinated requirements. The customer chose an Avalon 8 Slimline, which fits beautifully in the inglenook, and produces up to 8kw of heat.

The customer is delighted with the stove and installation, and I must admit, I think it looks great!

Grey Brick Slips

Our customer from Dunstable Bedfordshire wanted a slightly different look to his fireplace. He wanted a grey brick slip with black riven slate hearth and dark brown solid oak mantel. He also wanted the fireplace opening to be quite tall, which we were able to do as the chimney flue went straight up. Kyle did a brilliant job, the customer is delighted, and we think this traditional looking multi fuel stove looks great in the newly completed fireplace!

Another Brick Slip Installation

One of last weeks customers wanted to remove an old gas fire, which was raised off the floor.

They wanted to have a brick finish though, and the only way to do so was to use 10mm brick slips. In opening up a fireplace you are left with a lot of cut bricks, which don't give a good finish. The ideal solution is to use brick slips. They are 10mm thick brick faces, which can be adhered to the opened fireplace like tiles. We then use a brick mortar to point between the bricks, and hey presto, it looks like full sized bricks, but only a tenth of the thickness!

In this installation the fireplace was lowered to it's original level, widened to take the stove, brick slips fitted, and a honed black slate hearth installed. The stove was an Avalon Compact 5 wood burning stoves with stainless steel handles.

Chimney Pot Required!

Sometimes the customers chimney pot isn't tall enough to securely take the pot hanging cowl.

In these instances we chop out the existing small pot, remove the cement, and fit a new roll topped chimney pot.

A large amount of mortar is required to build up the haunching to the pot, ensuring it is secure in all weathers!

Aspect 4 Installation in Hatfield

One of our recent customers had a small fireplace, which meant a small stove would be required. The Aspect 4 Compact Wood Burner was the perfect fit. At 400mm wide it can be installed into the smallest of openings, but with a large glass to the door, offers a beautiful view of the flames from the burning wood. Firstly the fireplace had to be widened to provide at least 100mm on each side of the stove for air circulation. The opening was lined with white fire board to provide a clean bright finish, with a 30mm thick slate hearth. Finally the chimney breast was plaster finished. With the fireplace fully prepared the stove could then be installed, which included a double skinned stainless steel flue liner, chimney cowl, closure plate, stove pipe and adapters.

The customer is delighted with the end result, and wrote to us saying "Thanking you for an excellent installation. Kyle did a great job. When anyone asks us regarding our beautiful stove, we will have no hesitation in recommending you and your team."

Preparing for the installation of a TermaTech TT40R

Here's some pictures showing the removal of a fireplace in preparation for installing a TermaTech TT40R.

TermaTech woodburning stoves are ideal for situations where there's no chimney, they're enviromentally friendly, with cosy heat and neat lines.

After discussing the options the customer decided to locate the wood burner where their old electric fire was and have the twin wall flue going through the bedroom above and through the loft.

The pictures show the removal of the fireplace.

Once the plasterboard surround was removed we found a 1970's/80's brick fireplace which had been covered up by a previous owner. Once the brick fireplace was removed we discovered the original 1960's clad stone fireplace which also had to be chopped away.

The plasterer is yet to go in and re-plaster the back wall. We'll keep you informed of progress!

Consort 5 Compact in Elstow, Bedfordshire

This is a recent installation in Elstow Bedfordshire of a Parkray 5 Compact multi fuel stove in a Victorian cottage. The property has just been bought and is being renovated. The new home owners wanted to remove the old gas fire and 70's fireplace, open up the adjacent fireplace and create a log store. A quarry tile hearth was built for the stove, and slate tiles used as the base of the log store. Works included opening up the bricked up fireplace, installing the stove and hearth, creating a log store in the adjacent fireplace, plaster finishing the chimney breast and fitting a solid oak mantle.

The customers are delighted with the work to the fireplace and installation of the stove, as well as additional minor building works required in the room.

Parkray Consort 4 in Bedford

Just finished a three day install of a Parkray Consort 4 multi fuel stove in Bedford. Normally it wouldn't take 3 days for an installation, however there was lots of work to do opening the fireplace, the side of which had to be rebuilt, making good and plastering the chimney breast, as well as fitting a chimney pot to take the cowl and liner. The fireplace was lined with fire board and painted black. The customer is delighted with the final result!

The Consort 4 comes as a multi fuel stove emitting up to 5.5kw of heat, but with a nominal output of 4.7kw doesn't need an air vent. We fitted a 904 grade double skin stainless steel Schiedel liner to cope with the hotter gasses produced from burning solid fuel. The hearth is 30mm riven slate, which has excellent heat resistant properties, and is easy to keep clean and maintain.

Parkray Consort 4 in Letchworth

We've just finished installing a Parkray Consort 4 multi fuel stove in Letchworth, Hertfordshire.

There was fireplace and surround to remove, but the customer wanted to retain the slate front hearth.

The fireplace was widened to accommodate the stove, the back hearth built, and the opening lined with white fire board.

The customer is delighted with this little stove that produces between 3kw and 5.5kw of heat. Although the room is small, it get's quite cold as it's north facing and doesn't get the sun during the day. The stove will solve that problem for them!

Aga Little Wenlock Classic SE

Installed an Aga Little Wenlock Classic SE cast iron stove today in Letchworth, Hertfordshire. Lovely little stove. Installed in an opened fireplace with a slate hearth that was cut from an old snooker table bed! The SE model is the smoke exempt version for burning wood in smoke free zones. It has a nominal output of 4.7kw so doesn't need an air brick, but has a maximum output of 7kw which is good for a stove with such a compact design..

Cleanburn Skagen 5 Installation

Our fitter Kyle is working in Tyttenhanger at the moment, installing a Cleanburn Skagen 5 in a barn conversion.

The Skagen 5 has a great heat output, but still manages to keep below a nominal of 5kw, which means there's no need for an air brick!

As soon as the installation is finished, which includes a 40mm sandstone hearth and twin wall flue.

Fireplace with Avalon Slimline 5

We recently finished installing an Avalon Slimline 5 stove from Hunter Stoves in a customers home in Welwyn, Hertfordshire.

The customer had a gas fire in a stone surround with hearth. We removed the fire, surround and hearth, widened the fireplace and increased the height to that required by the customer.

Once opened, we fitted brick slips to the sides and back of the fireplace, installed a black honed granite hearth, and fitted a solid oak mantle.

The customer was so delighted we got a 5 out of 5 rating on our Facebook page! The results are stunning as you can see below.
